Breast cancer screening update

Some women aged between 70 and 79 are being re-invited for a breast screening appointment. The offer of a screen comes after some women did not receive an invitation for a final screen dating back to 2009. This was part of the routine NHS Breast Screening Programme, which invited women every three years aged 50 -70 (up to their 71st birthday).

This was caused by a problem in the screening IT system and different ways that regions issue invitations to patients.

Women who think they may be affected are being encouraged not to contact their GPs in the first instance but to contact the dedicated national helpline on 0800 169 2692 or to look on NHS Choices website for more information at https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/breast-cancer-screening/missed-invitations/
